What is dog separation anxiety?
It can be defined as a subset of a range of problem behaviors that happen when the owner isn't home. It is actually intense fear and panic. The behaviors are typically much greater in intensity and duration when the owner isn't present.
Some of the typical behaviors are: excessive vocalizing; chewing or destruction (particularly around entrances); frantic attempts to escape; soiling (when normally house-trained).

Let's start by busting some myths...
- You caused your dog's separation anxiety. No, you did not.
- This is not a treatable condition. It is treatable, but not a quick fix.
- Your dog is behaving out of spite. No... dogs don't have that sort of cognitive ability.
- Putting your dog in a crate will fix it. Crating can sometimes make the panic worse.
- Letting him bark it out will fix it. Again, no.
- He looks guilty, so he knows what he's done wrong. No, it's most likely fear.
- Giving them a Kong or other food treats. Unfortunately not.
Successful training includes:
- Management (suspending absences).
- Looking at what your dog can do now.
- Developing a specialized training plan.
- Supporting you and your dog through exercises to reach success.
